Background
Emergency Services of New England Inc is one of the oldest and most successful organizations providing Physician Assistant Services in Emergency Medicine in existence.
Formed in 1978 by a partnership between emergency medicine PAs and emergency physicians, its primary purpose was to provide a comprehensive and cohesive mix of experienced and exemplary PAs and physicians to staff rural emergency departments primarily in Vermont.
Prior to adopting this model, rural emergency departments with low volumes found it almost impossible to staff with 24hr a day coverage, and relied upon a mixture of non-emergency trained providers (often moonlighting or semi –retired physicians from other areas of specialty practice).
The need to provide 24/7/365 coverage of clinicians specifically trained and dedicated to emergency medicine was recognized but often not feasible. ESNE Inc. sought to bring a solution to those issues by utilizing highly trained and experienced PAs who’s training and careers were dedicated to emergency services, working under the direction of a board certified emergency physician.
Even today and for the foreseeable future, there are insufficient emergency physicians in the workforce to cover the current demand. This shortage is anticipated to last several decades or longer and the ESNE model of the PA/MD team of dedicated emergency medicine providers has been a successful solution. Even in regions where the emergency physician workforce is strongest, it is difficult to recruit a full complement of physicians into a lower volume practice setting with less resources than larger urban centers. Again, the MD/PA team works to provide coverage at a reasonable and sustainable cost to smaller rural and critical access hospitals.
ESNE Inc PAs are some of the most elite among the profession. Selected for academic and clinical excellence, experience, and extraordinary customer service skills, patient satisfactions scores and CMS core measures are among the best in the nation. Supported by residency trained and board certified Emergency Physician leadership, the team is able to bring state of the art practice into more smaller, more isolated institutions.
In existence for over 40 years the organization continues to expand its services to additional institutions while keeping all the core competencies in place, and expanding the practice roles.
